Sergei Eisenstein's debut film is more than a landmark of Soviet cinema; it's easily one of the most thrilling and inventive films to emerge from the silent era of Russian film making. Eisenstein was a theatre director and stage designer with some very specific ideas about the cinema, and he put them into practice telling the story of a worker's strike in pre-Revolution Russia, portraying the struggle not of leader against leader, but of the proletariat against the factory owners, enlivened by a conspiratorial subplot involving a quartet of insidious spies sent to infiltrate the ranks of the workers. The subject matter is at times didactic and the acting often hammy and overwrought, but the technique is vibrant and the images striking. Eisenstein's compositions reflect the graphic boldness of contemporary poster art, mixing poetic realism with grotesque expressionism in a gripping style, and his famous montage editing style (to be perfected in his next film, Battleship Potemkin) is raw, experimental and energetic. Eisenstein's later films are more consistent and elegant, but none of them have the sheer cinematic invention and energy of this first film. The new score, composed and performed by the idiosyncratic Alloy Orchestra, combines a mix of martial and mood music on synthesiser with the driving percussion of drums, wood blocks, bells and wrecking yard of clanging metal objects--a dynamic soundtrack to one of the most auspicious directoral debuts ever. --Sean Axmaker

Eistenstein''s first film deals with a widespread labor strike in a rural factory and is, without doubt, one of the most astonishing debuts in film history. His introduction of dialectical montage--which included then-innovative shock cuts to such violent images as a raised club, a bloody face, and a bull''s throat being cut--both disturbed and galvanized contemporary audiences. Combined with the expressionistic compositional style Eisenstein had absorbed from French and German films, it established its director as a new force in world cinema. Commissioned by the government to commemorate the first, failed Bolshevik revolution, the film covers a 1912 strike at a metalworks factory whose workers have been bullied and humiliated by the plant management. When a fired worker commits suicide, the workers organize a peaceful strike. But the plant bosses make use of agents provocateurs and eventually bring in the czar''s troops, who crack down on the strikers with maximum brutality. Aside from his editing innovations, Eisenstein pioneered the concept of the collective group as a character, influenced by the example of the newly formed Soviet Union, as well as the Constructivist art of the period. Первый полнометражный фильм классика отечественного кино Сергея Эйзенштейна рассказывает собирательную историю зарождения и подавления стачки на одном из российских заводов в эпоху между двумя революциями. В «Стачке» в его фильмы впервые входит тема революции и революционный монтаж, формальные эксперименты соединяются с правдивым показом быта, эксцентрика - с трагизмом, возникает герой-масса.
«Стачка» отражает увлечение Эйзенштейна цирком и французскими авантюрно-приключенческими фильмами и отмечает начало его многолетнего сотрудничества с оператором Эдуардом Тиссэ. Спустя много лет Виктор Шкловский писал о «Стачке»: «Картина настолько необычна, она настолько неумела, что источает гениальность».

На одном из крупнейших заводов России организуется стачка, поводом для которой послужило самоубийство рабочего, несправедливо обвиненного администрацией завода в краже инструментов. В фильме участвовали актеры Первого рабочего театра. Первая работа в кино Сергея Эйзенштейна и Максима Штрауха (полицейский шпик).

Strike Blu-ray delivers great video and audio in this exceptional Blu-ray release

In Russia's factory region during Czarist rule, there's restlessness and strike planning among workers; management brings in spies and external agents. When a worker hangs himself after being falsely accused of thievery, the workers strike. At first, there's excitement in workers' households and in public places as they develop their demands communally. Then, as the strike drags on and management rejects demands, hunger mounts, as does domestic and civic distress. Provocateurs recruited from the lumpen and in league with the police and the fire department bring problems to the workers; the spies do their dirty work; and, the military arrives to liquidate strikers.


Strike Blu-ray, Video Quality - 4(5)

Restored by The Cinémathèque De Toulouse and given a 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer by Kino-Lorber, Strike's Blu-ray presentation renders obsolete every prior home video edition of the film. If you own Kino's 2010 release of Battleship Potemkin you'll have a good idea of what to expect—an image that's beautifully resolved, tonally balanced, and faithful to source, free from digital tampering and compression/encode issues. Of course, since the film is nearly 90 years old, there's bound to be some age-related damage to the print. Specks and small pieces of debris often dot the image, brightness fluctuates on occasion, and there are vertical scratches that sometimes run through several seconds of footage, but this is all to be expected from a silent film from the mid-1920s. What's important is that the restoration efforts of The Cinémathèque De Toulouse clearly focused on gathering the best possible materials and presenting them faithfully. The film's inherent grain is fully intact—there are no leftover traces of noise reduction—and edge enhancement doesn't appear to have been used. The level of clarity is often astounding, with strong detail visible in the factory environments and in the gaunt, proletarian faces of the non-professional actors Eisenstein was fond of casting. The tonal gradation is excellent as well, with dense blacks, crisp whites and natural-looking contrast. There are some shots where whites seem a bit blown out, but I suspect this has more to do with the source footage than with any post-telecine digital color grading. This is almost certainly the best the film has looked since its 1925 debut.


Strike Blu-ray, Audio Quality 4(5)

Strike features a newly commissioned musical score compiled and performed by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, and presented via a Linear PCM 2.0 stereo track. The orchestral music is rich and vibrant, with deep cellos and shimmering strings, bright horns and mournful clarinet. Complementary rather than overpowering, the score suits the film well, underscoring the action and hitting all the right emotional cues, especially during the bleak ending. A 5.1 audio option would've been nice, but I actually prefer a 2.0 presentation for silent films—it feels more appropriate, somehow. All intertitles are in English, and there are forced English subtitles for certain text-heavy shots, like headlines or signs.

По сравнению:

Изображение - издание от "Ruscico" явно проигрывает по четкости, контрастности и площади кадра обоим изданиям. Как мне кажеться, у "Ruscico" интертиры оригинальные (первоначальные), сюдя по их дизайну.
Звук - музыкальное сопровождение полностью отреставрированно у "Ruscico", оно отличаеться от музыкального сопровождения от "Image Entertainment".





О фильме:

«О стачке как одной из форм борьбы пролетариата против капиталистической эксплуатации.
На одном из крупнейших заводов царской России внешне всё спокойно: рабочие трудятся, буржуазия наслаждается жизнью. Но мастера завода замечают, что среди рабочих возникает скрытое волнение, и сообщают об этом дирекции, дирекция — охранке. Шпики залезают во все щели завода и рабочего посёлка. Между тем комитет РСДРП распространяет прокламации — призыв к борьбе.
Поводом к стачке служит самоубийство рабочего, несправедливо обвинённого дирекцией завода в краже инструмента. Рабочие покидают завод, машины останавливаются. В лесу организуется митинг. Попытка конной полиции разогнать рабочих не даёт результатов. Узнав об отказе хозяев удовлетворить требования рабочих, стачком решает продолжать забастовку. Охранка организует поджог винного склада, уверенная, что голодающие рабочие бросятся грабить склад и подадут повод к репрессиям. Но план охранки проваливается. По приказу пристава пожарные водой из брандспойтов разгоняют стачечников. Вожаки арестованы, но стачка не прекращается. Рабочие вновь выходят на улицы. И тогда начинается кровавая расправа. Гибнут десятки пролетариев, как тысячами они гибли на Ленских приисках, в Ярославле и других промышленных районах России».
